Amazon is bringing Spider-Man Noir to life in an exciting new live-action series, centered around the noir-themed Spider-Man character who became a breakout favorite thanks to Sony’s Spider-Verse animated films. Nicolas Cage’s portrayal in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which won an Academy Award, played a huge part in bringing Spider-Man Noir into the mainstream, endearing audiences with his dark and gritty charm.

While Cage’s performance helped catapult Spider-Man Noir into the spotlight, he’s actually not the first acclaimed actor to bring this version of Spider-Man to the screen.

So, who was Spider-Man Noir before Nic Cage?

Before Nicolas Cage brought Spider-Man Noir to the big screen, This Is Us and Heroes star Milo Ventimiglia voiced an animated version of the character in the Ultimate Spider-Man series (2012-2017). Ventimiglia’s Spider-Man Noir appeared in the Season 3 arc “The Spider-Verse (Pt. 2),” where he teamed up with the “Prime Universe” Peter Parker (voiced by Drake Bell). This storyline saw Spider-Man Noir join a coalition of Spider-variants—Spider-Man 2099, Spider-Girl, Spider-Ham, Spyder-Knight, and Miles Morales—all of whom are targeted by Norman Osborn/Green Goblin. Osborn seeks to steal their DNA to become the villainous “Spider-Goblin.”

This animated take on Spider-Man Noir was a geeky Easter egg for fans, channeling the dark 1930s noir style for a character who was gritty and mysterious. This depiction of Spider-Man Noir set the groundwork for the larger Spider-Verse concept, which would eventually lead to Sony’s acclaimed Into the Spider-Verse film series.

Now, Amazon’s upcoming live-action Spider-Noir series will dive even deeper into this noir universe. Thanks to Nicolas Cage’s comedic, idiosyncratic performance, Spider-Man Noir has become an audience favorite, opening the door for a new type of Spider-Man series. If Amazon and MGM Studios can fully realize the dark, retro world of Spider-Man Noir, it would mark a pivotal expansion for Sony’s Spider-Verse franchise and could pave the way for even more live-action adaptations from the Spider-Verse.
